What began in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2000 is now a listed hydrogen company with its own production plant, a growing project portfolio and technologies that will change the market.

2000 – 2012 The founding years

Right from the start.

APEX Energy Teterow GmbH was founded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2000 with the aim of building systems for renewable energy that really work. No big capital behind it, no ready-made infrastructure. Just a clear technical conviction.

The focus was on photovoltaics: customized system solutions for a growing market, energy self-sufficient and reliable. From the very beginning, the company worked closely with research institutions – including the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) in Rostock, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the IRES Institute. This attitude – research as a basic building block, not as an accessory – is still part of the company’s DNA today.

Realignment from 2012

Hydrogen.
A strategic decision.

From 2012, APEX consistently steered research, development and engineering expertise in a new direction: hydrogen. Not as a reaction to a trend, but out of the conviction that green hydrogen would be one of the main pillars of the energy transition.

In close cooperation with LIKAT Rostock, basic principles were developed that still have an impact today – including the patented salt storage technology, from which AKROS Energy later emerged. At the same time, a start was made on building up system expertise for electrolysers, storage solutions and operating concepts.

In 2018, a new production facility for energy storage systems based on LOHC technology was built on Hans-Adam-Allee in Rostock-Laage – built in-house and expanded with state funding. The Rostock-Laage site was acquired the following year: the heart of H2APEX today. Fifteen new employees were hired in 2019 – a clear signal of the growth that was to follow.

On June 12, 2020 – the 20th anniversary of the company’s founding – the foundation stone was laid in Rostock-Laage for what was to become reality a year later: The first grid-connected hydrogen plant went into operation in March 2021. With an electrolysis capacity of 2 MW, it was the largest of its kind in Europe at the time of commissioning.

The plant combined several system components from the outset: Electrolyzer, battery storage, a hydrogen CHP unit, a fuel cell and a public Hâ‚‚ filling station for buses and trucks. No temporary demo operation – a fully integrated supply system that produces and releases hydrogen every day.

In 2022, McPhy’s 2 MW alkaline electrolyzer entered mass production, generating approximately 400 kg of green hydrogen per day, supplied directly to fleet operators and industrial customers. In the same year, the EPC business grew to over 15 MW of installed capacity—with projects such as HyBit Bremen, H2-Wyhlen, and the Rebus infrastructure in the Rostock region.

2023 – 2024 Capitalization & future

2023 marked the next structural step: the APEX Group went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange through a reverse takeover with the listed exceet Group – in the Prime Standard. H2APEX thus became one of the few listed hydrogen companies in Germany with its own ongoing production operations.

In the same year, the company secured a 5.2 hectare site in Lubmin as well as a grid capacity of 1 gigawatt – the strategic starting signal for the Hydrogen Hub Lubmin: a planned electrolysis capacity of up to 600 MW, developed jointly with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

In 2024, the holding company was renamed H2APEX Group SCA. The company sent out a public signal with the Opening Bell on the German Stock Exchange. In July 2024, the funding decision for the major H2ERO project was made – another milestone on the road to industrial hydrogen supply in northern Germany.

Two technologies.
One ecosystem.

The many years of research work have resulted in two independent companies that extend the H2APEX claim – End-to-End Hydrogen – into the depths.

Chemical hydrogen storage based on salt – unpressurized, non-toxic, highly efficient. The result of research cooperation with LIKAT Rostock. Pilot plant in operation. TRL 6 – on the way to TRL 7.

HydroExceed-Logo

Type IV compressed gas storage tank at 500 bar, carbon fiber reinforced and standard-compliant. Founded in 2022 as a spin-off in Rostock-Laage. Series production underway – scalable from 300 tanks per month to 50,000 per year.
